Hustle Culture: helpful or hurtful?

I’m taking a look on the impact of hustle culture on our health and wellness, it might not actually be all bad!

We seem to have designed a relentless pursuit of achievement. That’s the essence of hustle culture. It glorifies long hours, constant busyness, and the relentless drive for success. But is this the only way to unlock your full potential, or is it a recipe for burnout and health woes?

Let’s delve into the pros and cons of hustle culture and its impact on our well-being 🌱

I get it, it can seem that the world is telling us that we need to use every minute that we’re awake and keep hustling in order to gain any sort of success.

I feel like there’s 3 parts to the culture and why it’s so present:

  • It activates addiction pathways: Because it has a high risk, high reward aspect to it, this can increase motivation. The temptation of the possibility of a big win.
  • It can lead to financial freedom: Long hours and dedication can lead to career advancement and increased income, which is a big status and lifestyle upgrade.
  • A more resilient human: By overcoming challenges and achieving goals through sheer hustle can build confidence in your capabilities, which is no doubt a valuable asset in any area of life.

But here’s the dark side:

  • Increased likelihood of burnout.
  • Relationships are put at risk.
  • Chronic stress wears the body and increases long-term illness.
  • It never ends, it always seems like you could be doing more
(especially if you see someone else doing ‘better’).
It must be possible to leverage the benefits of the hustle culture, whilst not putting ourselves at risk?! I’ve figured it out and I’ll tell you!

There’s a balance, trust me, it’s not all or nothing.

Hustle culture doesn’t have to be the only option.

If we understand hustle culture as the nature of fearlessly pursuing something that leads to a positive outcome,  then we have to know 3 things!

  • What do you want?

If you know what your vision looks like, it means that you can regularly be use that very vision to filter your decisions and guide your behaviours.

  • What’s actions and behaviours are going to help that outcome?

These are your stepping stones. The ‘hard’ work and process that you need to put in to create the outcome. The more frequent these actions occur, the more likely you are to succeed.

  • What actions and behaviours are going to hurt that outcome?

There are going to be threats to your success along the way, and the more that you can predict and protect yourself against them, the better.

Let’s dive into these threats a bit more:

  • Burnout
  • Fatigue
  • Distractions
  • Doubt
  • Confusion

These are the most common reasons that people fall into the hustle culture machine and never get out. As you become aware of these threats, you can implement behaviours into your routine so that it minimises the likelihood of them occurring.

These are the actions to prevent the threats:

  • Reflection
  • Time Blocks
  •  Gratitudes
  • Visualisation
  • Community

Balance and success can happen simultaneously, you just have to be aware and persistent enough to create this balance in your life.
